House System
The House System at Brownhills Ormiston Academy
At Brownhills Ormiston Academy (BOA), our House System is at the heart of school life. Every student and member of staff belongs to one of our four houses, each led by a dedicated Head of House:
- Coppice – Mr J Pierce
- Holland – Miss J Greenhough
- Knaves – Mrs J Huskisson
- Phineas – Mrs J Mitchell
Our aim is to use the House System to build community, culture, and competition; three vital ingredients for creating confident, resilient young people who are prepared for a life of choice and opportunity. These values help us to foster academic success, develop character, and ensure that every student feels a sense of belonging.
Community
Belonging to a house creates strong bonds between students across year groups. It provides opportunities for teamwork, leadership, and mutual support. Community is central to our vision of ensuring that every student is known, cared for, and able to thrive at BOA.
Culture
Through the House System, we nurture a culture of ambition, kindness, respect, and achievement. Students learn the importance of contributing positively to their community, celebrating diversity, and striving to be the best version of themselves.
Competition
Competition gives students a sense of pride and motivation. At BOA, house points are awarded for a wide range of successes: working hard in lessons, answering questions effectively, showing kindness, taking part in enrichment, and even representing the school on an international stage.
Throughout the year, students also take part in house competitions that promote resilience and school spirit. These events develop the ability to be magnanimous in victory and gracious in defeat; a lesson that extends far beyond school life.
Our competitions reflect the value we place on both sport and the arts. Every student participates in House Cross Country, as well as other sporting events that give opportunities for both individual and team achievement. Alongside this, we celebrate creativity and expression through House Music, House Drama, House Public Speaking, and House Debating competitions, ensuring that every student has the chance to shine.
Fundraising for Local Charities
Each house also organises fundraising events throughout the year to support local charities. This teaches students the importance of empathy, generosity, and social responsibility, reinforcing our belief that education is about preparing students to make a positive difference in the world.
Celebrating Success
At the end of the year, house points, competition results, and fundraising totals are combined to crown the House Champions. The winning house is awarded the prestigious House Trophy and receives a prize to celebrate their achievement.
This moment is a highlight of the school calendar, recognising not only academic success but also teamwork, effort, and contribution to the wider academy community.
